Monster Mash.

I’m not sure if this is technically action related news or not, but since I just posted something about GODZILLA I figure this should make the cut too.

Anywho, it would seem that director of “monster has eyes where eyes don’t usually appear” movies, Guillermo del Toro, has finally gotten the OK to create his adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS. You will also be able to view it in 3 dimensions…lucky you. This information comes from Deadline.

I haven’t read the story that this is based on yet, but it seems like a pretty good monster tale, so there could be a good many opportunities for running and jumping. Unfortunately it seems like one of those stories where the monsters just slaughter people and the humans can only run away, which I’m always a little “meh” on. I prefer stories where there’s a chance to fight back, but I guess that’s what differentiates horror from action.

Der Be Wenches.

For those that care about such things, a website called Radar Online has posted a bunch of pictures from the set of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES. They mostly just show Johnny Depp looking exactly like he did in the other movies and Penelope Cruz looking like she’s going to a costume party. Sure looks like a PIRATES movie. Let’s hope it’s better than the last one…by a lot.

Go! Go!

It’s been almost a year since we last heard anything about the GODZILLA reboot that some guys wanted to do, but all that has changed! Using your eyes and maybe your toes, behold this picture from the latest comic convention that showed the design that will be used for Godzilla in the new movie!

Bananas!

I like it…though it’s basically just a drawing of Godzilla smashing buildings. I’m sure some people are relieved that they’re using a more “original” take on the character, but beyond that…nothing really to see here. If there was one thing that I liked about the design from the 1998 GODZILLA it was that they had Godzilla walk more hunched over (like a giant lizard would), not standing up like a human in a Halloween costume. I think it makes him seem faster and more agile, but I guess he doesn’t look as large then…everything has trade-offs.

Enter The Dragon And The B-52 Bomber.

I’ve been messing with a few other projects lately so I’ve been on a bit of a mini-vacation from ye olde Action Pants and since I don’t get paid to do this, I don’t feel all that bad about it. Anyway, I’m back and I’m about to get all catch-up on your donuts! Oh yeah!

So the first order of business, its new trailer time! And the new trailer that I just spoke of is for the upcoming movie SUCKER PUNCH from Zack Snyder. The trailer is equal parts silly and outrageous. You may enjoy it at this link.

Alright, you know me. I’m a man and as such I like dragons, sword-fights, and giant robots. But this just seems like a load on numerous levels. Firstly, the very premise of the movie is (as far as I know) that there’s a bunch of ladies trying to escape from a mental institution by dancing burlesque and whatever; so basically, all that stuff in the trailer with the dragons and the samurai robots and shit…yeah, it’s all in someone’s head so it has no consequences at all (take that sense of danger!). Secondly, I know Zack Snyder loves his green screens and computers, but geez, that looked like friggin’ SPY KIDS. Is that really the best we can do as a nation?

Maybe it’s just me, but this just looks like turd. I know what they were trying to do, but what they were trying to do is stuff 10 pounds of poo into a 5 pound bag. I think it’s just trying way to hard. It’s like the movie is screaming in my ear “LOOK AT THE DRAGON! NOW ENJOY SOME PG-13 SEXY! OH BOY, NOW THERE’S A SAMURAI, YOU LIKE ASIAN CULTURE!” and I’m trying to be cool and all, but it’s pretty obvious that I’m starting to get a little pissed. In the end we both go our separate ways and don’t call each other.

Captain Good-Guy.

Joe Johnston, acclaimed director of such films as THE WOLFMAN and JURASSIC PARK III was talking to The L.A. Times the other day and he mentioned that they’ve decided to take the America out of Captain America. Here’s a blurb:

We’re sort of putting a slightly different spin on Steve Rogers. He’s a guy that wants to serve his country but he’s not a flag-waver. We’re reinterpreting sort of what the comic book version of Steve Rogers was. He wants to serve his country, but he’s not this sort of jingoistic American flag

Basically, what he’s saying is “we’re terrified that a movie about such an obviously patriotic super-hero won’t sell overseas so we’re going to act like he’s Captain International.” I mean, he says “he’s not a flag-waver,” and he’s right, he’s a flag-wearer. The man is literally draped in the American flag and you’re telling me that guy isn’t a little patriotic? The worst part about this is that they seem to be putting modern sensibilities onto a guy who served in World War II and was frozen through all of the Vietnam and Iraq wars.

I’m guessing that this movie is going to have some kind of U.S. government conspiracy going on or there will be a bad order that Steve Rogers will disobey. It just feels like they’re going to do whatever they can to make sure the audience separates the Captain from the America and that’s pretty sad.

He’s The Law!

You may recall that Peter Travis will be directing a new movie based on JUDGE DREDD, what you may not know, but will know by the time you finish reading this sentence, is that Karl Urban is getting ready to play The Law, at least that’s what Bleeding Cool is saying.

I’m usually not that easily impressed, but this is a really good casting job by Peter Travis. Urban is a solid actor who has a voice that is cool enough to carry a role that will require him to keep most of his face hidden most of the time.

I’ve also read a brief script report that made it seem like this movie would basically be a remake of DIE HARD, except they gave John McClane a sidekick to slow him (and the movie) down. I’m not sure if that report was on the up-and-up, but I kind of hope it wasn’t.

The Backup Heroes.

I’m usually able to come up with some kind of smarty-pants way of starting these things, but today I’m shooting blanks. So I figure I’ll just let you know that it has been confirmed that some guy named Mark Ruffalo has been signed to play Bruce Banner and another guy named Jeremy Renner is set to play Hawkeye in THE AVENGERS. We all know about Banner/The Hulk, but if you didn’t know, Hawkeye is the joker of the group who shoots arrows at people.

I have no idea who the Ruffalo guy is, but I just saw Jeremy Renner in THE HURT LOCKER. The movie seemed like a pretty by-the-books war drama, but he was good in it. I’m pretty sure he can play Hawkeye with all the nuance and depth that it demands.

That’s Marvelous!

Boy, we went so long without much news coming out about THOR, (ah, memories) but those days are long gone. Long live the age of THOR information! To go along with that pic that I posted a few days ago, there’s this new one that shows various characters in a very large, very gold room.

And it reclines.

The best part of that picture for me is that you can see Loki over on the left side wearing his silly pointed hat. I know I kind of bashed the look of Loki from the previous picture that we got, so I should give props where it’s due. Nice job with the hat guys. I still don’t dig the full ensemble, but hey, beggars can’t be choosers.

Turn Off The Blinker!

Perhaps you’ll recall that The Rock was working on a new movie about driving and revenge titled FASTER. If you don’t recall it, the above sentence is all you really need to know regarding the previously mentioned movie. But really, the best way to explain it is through a one minute sampling of video and sound. Enjoy.

As I mentioned way back when, I’m psyched to see The Rock doing action again! I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m sure he was positively splendid in TOOTH FAIRY, but it just isn’t what he was born to do. God gave him the name The Rock for a reason, and I am a firm believer that the reason is so that he can star in action movies that I will enjoy.

Very soon now, the world will be graced with the greatest theatrical experience ever in history, THE EXPENDABLES. As we await its glorious coming with meals of bacon, let us sit back and enjoy these behind-the-scenes clips courtesy of Apple.

There’s some pretty cool stuff in there. I love to watch Stallone work; he just has such a great way of communicating what he wants from everyone around him. It’s also cool to know that he actually says “absolutely” in everyday conversation.
